Why Apple Leads the Market
More and more customer journeys no longer begin with search, but with ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, or Perplexity. Consumers are increasingly using AI to compare products, discover brands, and make purchasing decisions. As a result, a new form of visibility is emerging: not only how people perceive a brand, but also how AI systems have learned to understand that brand.
For this analysis, AIRepScore examined twenty well-known brands from the Dutch retail and e-commerce market. Rather than focusing on revenue, market share, or customer satisfaction, the study explored something different: the position that five leading AI models assign to these organizations. Which brands are perceived as authorities? Which brands are recommended most naturally? And which associations consistently appear across different AI systems?
Top 20 market ranking
At the top of the ranking are Apple, followed by IKEA, Albert Heijn, Coolblue, and Bol. These are all brands with strong positions in consumers’ minds, but more importantly, they are brands with a clear and distinctive story. That appears to be particularly valuable in the age of AI.

While traditional search engines primarily rank hyperlinks, large language models operate through patterns, associations, and accumulated knowledge structures. As a result, brands that have consistently communicated the same positioning over many years are often recognized more clearly than brands whose strength is primarily driven by scale or market dominance.
Competitive Positioning Map
Apple is leading the pack
Apple may be the clearest example of this phenomenon. Across virtually all models analyzed, the brand is associated with innovation, design, user experience, and premium positioning. What stands out is not only the positive perception itself, but the remarkable consistency with which these associations reappear. In the eyes of AI, that consistency translates into exceptional brand strength.
IKEA wins on Brand Clarity
IKEA reaches the top through a very different route. The Swedish home furnishing giant is not primarily perceived as exclusive or technologically advanced. Instead, it scores highly because it has built an extraordinarily recognizable position around affordability, functional design, and accessibility. The findings suggest that AI systems do not necessarily reward the most prestigious brands; rather, they favor brands with a clear and distinctive identity.
Albert Heijn has a strong AI profile
Albert Heijn also demonstrates a strong AI profile. The brand is consistently associated with reliability, convenience, and market leadership. While its position differs from both Apple and IKEA, it is a position that AI models recognize with remarkable consistency. This underlines an important principle: AIRepScore does not simply measure innovation or popularity, but the overall strength and clarity of a brand’s reputation as perceived by AI.
The position of Bol
The analysis becomes particularly interesting when we look at Bol. For many Dutch consumers, Bol is the leading e-commerce platform. Yet within this comparison, the brand ranks fifth among the leading brands analyzed. That does not mean AI views Bol negatively. Quite the opposite. The models consistently recognize Bol as a major player within Dutch and Belgian e-commerce. However, the analysis suggests that the associations surrounding Bol are less distinctive than those of its peers.
Where Apple is immediately linked to innovation and IKEA to affordability, Bol’s identity is more strongly connected to scale, assortment, and market presence. These are valuable strengths, but they generate fewer emotional and differentiating associations. This may represent one of the greatest opportunities for the brand moving forward.
Brand Perception radar
Top 3 brands by AIRepScore from the full comparison
The positioning map and brand perception radar illustrates this dynamic clearly. Apple occupies a distinct position in the quadrant where innovation and authority intersect. IKEA follows from a different but equally recognizable position. Albert Heijn and Coolblue combine trust with strong market relevance. Bol sits closer to the center of the competitive landscape, not because it is a weak brand, but because AI systems assign fewer highly distinctive characteristics to it.

What AI tells about your brand
The observations goes to the heart of what AIRepScore is designed to measure. The framework was not created to produce yet another brand ranking. The real question is not which company achieves the highest score, but how AI systems perceive, interpret, and describe different brands, and where meaningful differences emerge between competitors.
As AI increasingly becomes an intermediary layer between consumers and brands, those perceptions matter more than ever. AI systems are already answering questions, recommending products, comparing providers, and influencing purchasing decisions. Understanding how they perceive your organization is rapidly becoming a strategic necessity.
Ultimately, the question is no longer just how consumers see your brand.
